Undoubtedly, the content is still and always be the king. 

Your content has the power to make or ruin your SEO game.

So, to make your game at SEO, you will need to work on the quality of your content. 

Quality of content includes:

• Add facts and figures

Image alternative tags are commonly ignored though it can have an effect on your ranking. 

Therefore, it is always recommended to use relevant and original images according to the content. 

Moreover, add target keywords of the page relevant to the image. 

It is big no, to not add irrelevant keywords with the unrelated images.

For example, you shouldn’t use the keyword ‘cat’ in an image of dog. 

The ideal length for image alt tag is 125 characters. 

Make sure your alt tags are descriptive enough that may include the target keyword.

 

#9. Image Optimization – Size, and Quality

Images on a web page are the major reason for a low speed. That in turn will drop your rankings. 

Therefore, it is important that you reduce the size of the image, so that your page shouldn’t cross 2 MB threshold. 

Moreover, the quality remains intact enough for a better visual. 

Tools such as Photoshop can help you reduce the size. 

And ideally JPEG format is the most recommended one.

 

#10. Internal Linking

Breadcrumbs are the most recommended for navigation and crawling.

Make sure you link your internal page at the right time and right place, every time.

Outbound linking is equally important.

However, make sure that you always link high ranking and authority sites. 

Particularly, government, institution, research agencies, and news media websites. 

Moreover, the linking should always be in the context of your content.

 

#12. Rich Snippets 

Again, rich snippets are very technical that will require you take special efforts. 

If your website is in WordPress, then you could ideally use rich snippet plugins such as ‘All in One Schema Rich Snippets’

There are various online tools available that can help you to generate rich snippets for your website. 

Though Rich Snippets increase your click through rate. Nevertheless, you can still reach top search without them.

 

#13. YouTube Optimization – Content and Quality

Google research says that a video can increase 90% conversion rate on your web page. 

Though, making videos can be difficult and time consuming, but still it’s worth it. 

But most importantly, your video submission to YouTube for your target keyword with a backlink to your page will increase the rank of your page. 

Looking for relevant topics or question people searching in your industry. And then make a video targeting the keyword.

 

#14. Google My Business – Local SEO 

Google My Business is a service to verify your business location on Google Maps. 

Google My Business is the best platform for targeting local keywords on Google search engine easily.

Everyone talks about engagement, very few people understand the ins and outs of it.

Nowadays, SEOs are using games, contests, quizzes etc. to increase interactivity.

 

#17. Click-Through-Rate 

If you’ve developed quality content, with amazing title and description, and you know people will love it. 

Then it doesn’t matter initially you may have low ranks but as people see your page, they will click on it. 

Eventually as your click through rate shoots up, so will your rank. 

I have seen one of my blogs initially ranking 43rd and then gradually the average rank reached 3.

That happened due to high click through rate, which was almost 3-4 percent at the start then increased with rank up to 15 percent.

Websites that tend to attract their first time visitors back to their website, or have high direct traffic, Google automatically increases their ranks.

If you need direct traffic, you would need to work on your branding, social media marketing and offline advertising. 

For returning traffic, you will need to work on your website.

Particularly on the user experience and user interface part.

 

#19. Mobile Responsiveness 

In 2019, Google changed its indexing policy to mobile first. 

That is primarily due to the mobile-led digital world today. 

You cannot remain oblivious to the fact that mobile digital world is already here. 

Apps and mobile sites are running the business in the online world. 

Therefore, your website needs to be mobile responsive. 

Otherwise, you will drastically lose your ranks on Google. 

You can check your mobile responsiveness using the Screenfly online tool.

 

#20. Website User Experience

Website user experience is a study of user online behavior and website development together. 

Today, it is important to understand your target audience’s needs, wants, preferences, and behavior. 

And based on that, you will set your color scheme, page structure, design and many other things. 

For example, a research says that colors such as Orange, Red, and Green should ideally be used for buttons as it increases click through rate. 

Furthermore, wrong placement of important content or call-to-action will lead to poor engagement and high bounce rate.

 

#21. Header Tags – H1, H2 and H3

People at Google said that header tags are not relevant. 

But to my experience, header tags are very much relevant still today. 

Use of target keyword in the header tag also helps you to increase your rank for the target keyword in Google search engine. 

There are header tags from H1 to H6. But it is recommended to use only H1 to H3 only.

The ideal size for header tags is 70 characters. 

The shorter header tags may show up on Google search itself.

Basically, CMS is a software app that allows you to manage your website’s content efficiently.

Furthermore, WordPress CMS is open source, which means it is free to use and modify.

In addition, it is a more flexible, scalable and user friendly CMS than any other CMS in the world.

Now, let’s get to the point. We are here to learn how to create a website in WordPress.

Let’s quickly start:

Step 1 – Buy domain

You will need to buy a domain name to get started. You can buy the domain from any service provider. 

I would recommend you to buy domain from Namecheap or Godaddy, both are best.

Ideally, I would recommend you to search for .com extension for your domain.

If you’re not able to find one then, you could also choose from hundreds of other domain name extensions.

Step 2 – Buy hosting

The next thing you will need is hosting space on a server to host your website.

You can again buy hosting from a hosting service provider. Both Namecheap and Godaddy sell cheap hosting services.

I recommend you to buy the hosting from the same service provider, from whom you’ve bought domain name.

Make sure you buy a cpanel based shared hosting, as it is easy to use and manage.

The first thing to do is to locate and set up your shared hosting.

Step 3 – Setup CPanel

After you have bought domain and hosting, now it is time to start your CPanel setup.

In your Namecheap shared hosting account CPanel, you can change your CPanel password from the ‘Preferences’ section.

Though you can access CPanel from your account. Or you could directly go to your CPanel from your login links: http://yourdomain.tld/cpanel and https://serverhostname:2083.

Your IP address and your server information will be given on the right hand side.

Step 4 – Connect your Domain with your hosting

There are two things you need to do to connect your domain with your hosting.

If you’ve bought the hosting and domain together in your account as recommended in the hosting step, then you don’t need to take these steps.

The first is to add your hosting domain name servers address to your domain’s DNS.

1. Login to your Namecheap account
2. Select ‘Domain List’ on the left side
3. Click on ‘Manage’ button with your domain
4. Go to ‘Nameservers’ and select ‘Namecheap Web Hosting DNS’ from the drop down
5. It can take up to 24 hours to set up, and start working, but many times it is immediate

The second is to add your domain to your web hosting.

1. Go to your CPanel
2. Scroll to ‘Domain’ section
3. Select ‘Addon Domains’ 
4. Add your domain in given format
5. Subdomain and document root will automatically add up
6. You can create FTP or skip it
7. Click ‘Add Domain’ 

Step 4 – Install WordPress in CPanel 

Now, it is time, we install WordPress in CPanel on your domain. Follow the instruction given below:

1. Go to your CPanel
2. Go to ‘Exclusive for Namecheap customers’ 
3. Select ‘Softaculous Apps Installer’ 
4. Select ‘WordPress’ from the list
5. Click on the ‘Install Now’ button below
6. Fill out the details to install WordPress: 
   1. Choose the domain from the drop down
   2. Leave ‘Database Name’ and ‘Table Prefix’ to default settings
   3. Update site settings as per your requirements
   4. Update the Username and Password (you will use it to login to your WordPress website)
   5. Add your Email id 
   6. Scroll down and click ‘Install’ 
7. It may take time to install the WordPress, wait for it.

Step 5 – Login to your WordPress Website

After install, it is time to visit your WordPress Website.

You will see your website live. If you’re not able to access it, then you must have missed some step.

It is time to login to your WordPress, from where you can add your content and customize your site.

Go to http://yourdomain.com/wp-admin

Now, login using your username and password (created in last step).

But often, we miss important steps that later turn into problems for the website.

1. Set the Site Title

Your WordPress website is listed on any search engine or portal, the first thing highlighted will be your site title. It is very important you update the site title at first instance.

Step 1. Go to ‘Settings’

Step 2. Select ‘General’

Step 3. Edit ‘Site Title’

Step 4. Scroll down and click ‘Save Changes’ button

 

2. Set the ‘Tagline’ 

With the title, your website tagline will be added to it. Therefore, it is important to edit. If you don’t have a tagline, then you could add your primary keyword such as ‘top WordPress website development company’.

Step 1: Go to ‘Settings’

Step 2: Select ‘General’

Step 3: Edit ‘Tagline’ field

Step 4. Scroll down and click ‘Save Changes’ button

 

3. Add your Administrator Email Address

It is very important that you add an administrator email address. Because if any important update is available, or your website is facing downtime or error, or in the worst case scenario, your website is hacked, you will receive all emails on your registered email address.

Steps to change WordPress Administrator Email Address: 

Step 1: Go to ‘Settings’

Step 2: Select ‘General’

Step 3: Edit ‘Administrator Email Address’ 

Step 4: Scroll down and click ‘Save Changes’ button

Step 5: Click the link in confirmation email to change

 

4. Update the Timezone 

Timezone setting is very important for the news site, as inaccurate time could lead to low Google and Google News rankings. You could either set UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) or you could select the timezone based on the city.

Steps to change WordPress Timezone setting: 

Step 1: Go to ‘Settings’

Step 2: Select ‘General’

Step 3: Click the drop down and select City or UTC

Step 4: Scroll down and click ‘Save Changes’ button

 

5. Set the WordPress Homepage and Blog

Do you want to run a WordPress blog or create a WordPress website with a blog or without a blog? You can set this in WordPress homepage display settings. 

Steps to set WordPress homepage and blog setting: 

Step 1: Go to ‘Settings’ 

Step 2: Select ‘Reading’

Step 3: To keep a blog only then select ‘Your Latest Posts’ option 

Or Step 3.1: To create a website without a blog select ‘A Static Page’ option and in the ‘Homepage’ drop down select the homepage, and leave ‘Posts Page’ empty. 

Or Step 3.2: To create website with blog, complete step 3.1, and select the page from drop down to display your blog in ‘Posts Page’ field

Step 4: Scroll down and click ‘Save Changes’ 

 

6. Remove unnecessary plugins

There are default plugins that often come installed with the new WordPress installation. For example, you will find Hello Dolly, Akismet, Limit Login Attempts etc. 

In order to uninstall default plugins, follow these steps: 

Step 1: Hover pointer on ‘Plugins’ 

Step 2: Click on ‘Installed Plugins’ option 

Step 3: Scroll to the plugins, which you want to delete

Step 4: Click on ‘Deactivate’, then click ‘Delete’

 

7. Remove useless widgets

There can be default widgets already uploaded on your new WordPress installation. These widgets are often added in the widget sidebar sections. You should delete them from there as they are not necessary or valuable.

Steps to delete widgets: 

Step 1: Hover mouse pointer on ‘Appearance’ 

Step 2: Click on ‘Widgets’ option

Step 3: Go to the widget section on the right hand side

Step 4: Click on the widget, which you want to delete

Step 5: Click ‘Delete’ option at the bottom

 

8. Delete default comments 

Often, there can be one or more default comment(s). That is just extra load, which you should remove from the comment section.

Steps to delete comment in WordPress: 

Step 1: Go to the ‘Comments’ section 

Step 2: Hover mouse pointer on the comment, which you want to delete

Step 3: Click on ‘Trash’ option 

Step 4: On the top, click on ‘Trash’ section

Step 5: Hover pointer on the comment

Step 6: Click on ‘Delete Permanently’ 

 

9. Delete the ‘Hello World’ post in WordPress

Again the default post is there in your WordPress. Many times bloggers and developers forget to delete, and it just lies there forever. For thin content, it may affect your overall SEO. Therefore, you should delete.

Instructions to delete WordPress post: 

Step 1: Hover mouse pointer on ‘Posts’ section

Step 2: Click on ‘All Posts’ option

Step 3: Hover pointer on the post, which you want to delete

Step 4: Click on ‘Trash’ option 

Step 5: On the top, click on ‘Trash’ section

Step 6: Hover pointer on the trashed post

Step 7: Click on ‘Delete Permanently’ option

 

10. Delete the ‘Sample Page’ page

In the page section, you will find the default ‘Sample Page’ already published. It is useless that you should delete it.

Steps to delete a page in WordPress: 

Step 1: Hover pointer on ‘Pages’ section

Step 2: Click on ‘All Pages’ option

Step 3: Hover pointer on the page, which you want to delete

Step 4: Click on ‘Trash’ option 

Step 5: Now, on the top, click on ‘Trash’ section

Step 6: Hover pointer on the trashed page

Step 7: Click on ‘Delete Permanently’ option

 

11. Choose the right WordPress theme

Before you choose the WordPress theme, I would recommend you to learn everything about the theme. Check whether the theme is compatible with your WordPress version. Check for mobile responsiveness and speed. Check reviews in detail, this way you will learn about pros and cons of it. And finally analyze, whether it meets your current and future requirements for scalability. 

Steps to change WordPress theme:

Step 1: Hover mouse pointer on ‘Appearance’ section

Step 2: Click on ‘Themes’ option

Step 3: Click on ‘Add New’ button on the top

Step 4: You can choose the free theme from the library or 

Step 4.1: To upload paid theme click on ‘Upload Theme’ button on the top

Step 5: Click on ‘Install’ button for the choose free theme or 

Step 5.1: Click on ‘Upload Theme’ button on the top

Step 5.2: Click on ‘Choose File’ button and select the zip Theme folder from your PC

Step 5.3: Now, click on ‘Install Now’ button

Step 6: After installing, click on ‘Activate’ button in both free or paid uploaded theme

 

12. Install Required WordPress Plugins 

The newly installed WordPress theme will require plugins for it to function effectively. Install the required plugins, there could be optional plugins as well, which you can skip if you don’t need them.

Steps to install and activate WordPress plugins: 

Step 1: Hover mouse on ‘Plugins’ section

Step 2: Click on ‘Add New’ option

Step 3: Search using the search bar on the right side for the required plugin(s)

Step 4: Click on ‘Install Now’ button

Step 5: After installing, click on ‘Activate’ button 

Steps to delete WordPress plugins: 

Step 1: Go to ‘Plugins’ section 

Step 2: Click on ‘Installed Plugins’ option 

Step 3: Hover mouse pointer on installed plugin from the list

Step 4: Click deactivate and then delete (to delete the plugin) 

 

13. Setup Menu in WordPress 

The most important feature in your Website will always be the navigation bar (also called Menu bar). You must edit it to make it easier for you and others to reach certain sections in your website even if it is in the development stage.

Steps to edit and manage Menu (nav bar) in WordPress: 

Step 1: Hover mouse pointer on ‘Appearance’ section

Step 2: Click on ‘Menus’ option

Step 3: Give name to new menu in ‘Menu Name’ field, e.g. Main Menu

Step 4: Click ‘Create Menu’ button on the right hand side

Step 5: Select the check box for pages that you want to add to menu

Step 6: Click ‘Add to Menu’ button 

Note: Same way you can add posts or categories or create custom links in menu bar

Step 7: Click on ‘Save Menu’ button on the right hand side

Step 8: Select display location for the menu at the bottom (there will be one or more location to select from) 

 

14. Import and Upload Demo Data on WordPress

Many themes, particularly paid WordPress themes, come with demo data. The option to upload demo data makes it a whole lot easier. After uploading demo data, your WordPress website will look all the same as the preview of the theme. Thereafter, all you have to do is remove and add your content. 

Note: it is always recommended to learn about the process of uploading demo data from the theme documentation or theme creator website. There could be a different way suggested by the theme creator or they may have a plugin for uploading demo data. Following steps given below are the most common way to upload demo data on WordPress.

Steps to important and upload demo data:

Step 1: Hover mouse pointer on ‘Tools’ section

Step 2: Click on ‘Import’ option 

Step 3: Scroll down and click on ‘Install Now’ option given below WordPress 

Step 4: After installing it, click on ‘Run Importer’ option 

Step 5: Click on ‘Choose File’ option and select XML demo data file from your paid theme folder

Step 6: Now click on ‘Upload File and Import’ button below 

Step 7: it will take time, finally check your website after successful upload

 

15. Choose the right page builder WordPress plugin

There are a range of free and paid page builder WordPress plugins such as Visual Composer, Beaver, Divi, Siteorigin etc. If you are using a paid theme, there’s a high probability that you will get the page builder with it.

 

16. Install Text Editing Plugins for More Font Styles

The WordPress default text editing settings are limited. That’s why you will always need a text editing plugin for extra help. There are a number of text editing plugins to experiment with, but I recommend TinyMCE advanced text editor plugin.

17. Use Contact Form Plugins to Collect Customer Data

Next important feature you will need in your website is contact form. You will need a contact form to collect emails of subscribers, create contact forms, or create forms for payment etc. I have few suggestions for contact form plugins that are – Contact Form 7, WP Forms, Gravity Forms, Ninja Forms etc. 

 

18. On-Page SEO Optimize Using WordPress Plugin

For your website to rank on Search Engine such as Google, you will need a robust plugin for SEO on page optimization. There are only a few on-page SEO WordPress that I think does all the job such as Yoast SEO, RankMath, All-in-one SEO pack etc.

 

 

19. Optimize Image Using Plugin for Better Performance

Heavy images are the major factor behind slow website speed. Image optimization plugins to some extent helps in overcoming this problem. I think the best image optimization plugins are – WP Smush, Optimole, Imagify etc.

20. Increase Your WordPress Website Speed

From the SEO and engagement point of view, speed is extremely crucial for overall performance of your website. In your new WordPress installation, you will increase your speed using Cache and Speed optimization plugins such as WP Super Cache, W3 Total Cache, HTML Minify, AMP for WP etc. 

 

21. Secure Your WordPress Website from Spammers & Hackers

WordPress has been the center of attraction for hackers and spammers for quite some time now. Often, WordPress websites with weak and poor security or weak passwords are defaced or hacked. Moreover, spammers using bots to push their spam comments and messages to you. So, to keep your website secure from the start I recommend you to use a good security WordPress plugin such as WP Security, WordFence etc. 

 

22. Block Google and Other Search Engines from Crawling

Your new WordPress installation is not ready I hope so, therefore if Google crawls the website, then it won’t find anything. Moreover, if your website is not ready with content or may have not followed Google guidelines for ranking then you may get a penalty. So, to be on a safe side, it is ideal to block Google and other search engines from crawling your newly installed WordPress.

Steps to block Google and Search Engines from crawling WordPress: 

Step 1: Hover mouse pointer on ‘Settings’ section

Step 2: Click on ‘Reading’ option

Step 3: Scroll down and click on the check box that says ‘Discourage search engines from indexing the site’ 

Step 4: Click on ‘Save Changes’ button at the bottom

 

23. Select the Best Under Construction Plugin

Lastly, you need an under construction banner until your website is ready with content and design. I am sure you don’t want a poor impression on your traffic, who could be interested in your product or services. My personal favorite is underconstruction WordPress plugin. However, apart from it, there are a number of under construction plugins that you could use.

Step 1: Login to your Google My Business (GMB) Account. If you don’t have access to your account then recover your account by following instructions here: Request ownership of a Business Profile – Google My Business Help

Step 2: Click the location, for which you want to change the location.

Step 3: Go to the ‘Info’ section from the side pane in your account.

Step 4: Click on the edit icon (pencil icon) on the corner of map preview and address area

Step 5: Popup will open, here you can drag and drop your pin on the accurate location. Zoom in for better view and accuracy. 

Step 6: You can also change your address here. 

Step 7: Click on Apply on the bottom right corner of the popup. It can take more than 3 days for changes to reflect in your account and Google.
